A suburban Houston elementary school has been placed on lockdown amid reports of a gunman on the loose in the area.
Police exchanged gunfire with a suspect after a reported carjacking attempt in Pearland, about 16 miles south of Houston. No one was injured in the shootout, but the suspect was able to escape on foot, MyFOXHouston.com reported.
The shootout led to a lockdown of Magnolia Elementary School while police hunt for the suspect, who is being described as a "dangerous gunman."
Pearland school district officials have asked parents of students at Magnolia Elementary School to take the kids to a nearby junior high school.
That's after a 6:30 a.m. carjacking attempt nearby. Pearland police are looking for a gunman in the school's neighborhood.
About 150 elementary school students will remain at the junior high school campus for the rest of the day. Another 400 students stayed home, a school district spokesman told MyFOXHouston.com..
The suspect was described as a black male with a tall, thin build. He was last seen wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt.
