OMAHA, Neb. -- The Nebraska Unicameral has given first-round approval to gun-control legislation after a major compromise.
The amended proposal does away with the requirement of getting a permit from a local law enforcement agency to purchase guns, replacing it with instant federal background checks.
The amendment changed the stance of the National Rifle Association, which has now dropped its opposition to the bill.
The bill would also establish a statewide hotline to report stolen or missing guns and would require the state crime commission to study the issue of gun violence.
