This week, Omaha police announced they would put more officers in the area, but is that enough? Many in north Omaha say the police alone cannot solve the problem. They say the solution has to start within the neighborhoods. The latest shooting happened in broad daylight Friday morning at a convenience store where another man was shot and killed earlier this month. Heather Collins says, "A lot of people don't think Nebraska is dangerous, but I think Nebraska is getting worse than…bigger states." In response to that kind of thought, Omaha police have increased their patrol, but many say the problem runs deeper. "To me, it's up to the parents to keep the kids off the streets, from doing what they are doing," says JaRell Lewis. "But if the parents can't do nothing, then who is going to do something about it?" Perhaps the answer could be organizations like The Turning Point. Saturday, The Turning Point celebrated seven years of providing facilities and resources to organizations that help meet the needs of young people. "A lot of us would probably be out here in gangs or something, but thanks to Miriam Blair, we got something to do everyday," Lewis said. Everyday after school, Lewis comes to the youth empowerment program on the Turning Point campus. The program is run by Miriam Blair. "A lot of the kids we have are past gang members," Blair said
It would be interesting to get a running list of areas of town that crime activity is high and that it would be wise to carry a gun once we can. I found this story on North Omaha but not sure what streets or area is involved
