My first game today and it was a game of contrasting emotions. From a first half of despair to a second of some hope. My overwhelming impression, though, is how much we miss Lewis Montrose. I can cope with the loss of Danny Lloyd, but Lewis is a big miss. Our midfield today was regularly a shambles. The times that we had players out of position was concerning and the distribution was regularly awful. I have got used to seeing Lewis stroll out of defence with the ball and play it to another County player and set us onto the front foot. We didn't have that today and he will be a huge miss. |
However, he has gone and we have to live with that.
I hope Harry Winter had an off day today. From the occasions that I have seen him play, he makes too many wrong decisions and tries to play too many glory passes. I am amongst the Jimmy Ball sceptics, but thought overall he was more effective than Winter today, but much more work is required. Too often on the wrong side of a player for someone playing in the '4' role. Not as bad as I have read about him this season here though.
I felt sorry for Walker. Jim set the team up wrong today. We needed a 4-4-2 and additional support for Oswell and Warburton. I was unsure from the outset what role he was supposed to be playing and he became the scapegoat for a tactical error. I'm not saying he was great, but he wasn't given a fair crack of the whip today.
At the back, Hinchcliffe doesn't dominate his box well enough for me and his distribution is definitely dodgy. However, the defensive set up was awful first half. 3 centre halves, yet none could mark one centre forward for the 2 goals and the wing backs ended up either giving us a flat back 5 or out of position without adequate cover. We ended up with the worst of both worlds first half. I do quite like Cowan though. Looks like an astute signing.
Switching to a 4-4-2/4-5-1 second half made all the difference. I know Minihan has had some words from Gannon for his crossing, but today worked tirelessly and did well for both goals. McKenna was the sort of role required when he came on, but for the most part anonymous I thought. I haven't seen Stephenson live yet, but from what I have heard he was a big miss today. We needed that extra body up front today as Oswell and Warburton were too isolated and outnumbered for too often. They chased and worked tirelessly, but needed more help than they got. It was a credit to Oswell to get 2 goals today. I like him a lot already. He could be a massive player for us this season. Cute, knows how to stick his arse into a defender, win and hold up the ball, distribute it, find space and took his chances cooly. A number 9 who knows where the back of the net is! He looks like a great all round forward.
Overall a fair point, but frustrating that we had too many below par performances, especially first half, which gave us a big hill to climb. Positive that we did well 2nd half, but negative that we got into the hole in the first place.
