This is how I've always looked at football:
The object of the game is to kick the ball into the opponents goal. It can be done with less than 10 passes.
Their goal is say, 100yards from our goal. When we get the ball on the halfway line, we are 50 yards from our objective. What is the effing point of making our objective 80 yards away by passing it back.
