As to our own kids, it's a tough one isn't it? We've got a 12 and a 9 year old. I'm trying not to worry about it too much as things could change anyway, but Mrs Mozzer and I are already much less of the 'You've probably got to go to uni' mentality than I think we would have been, say, 10 years ago. There are a variety of reasons for that, not all connected with what we're talking about, but it will definitely be a factor if nothing changes.
But if my 9 year old still wants to be a vet in 9 years' time, then, assuming he could get in to a university, he's got two choices. Either accept the debt or do something else. Unless Mrs Mozzer or I win the lottery we don't do, carrying several tens of thousands of pounds more debt isn't something we can do. Particularly if they both want to go. And whilst we're far from loaded we're well aware we're not on the bread line either.
