They are investing in their future and most will need a degree to get the career they want. If they don't, then their options and earning capability could be very limited - unless they have the skills to work in the trade.
And if they do earn more, they will pay significantly more in tax over their lifetime.
I don't disagree with students funding some of their education (covering their living costs), but coming out with debts of £40,000 - and no guarantee of a job is ridiculous. Tuition fees are a disgrace, if we cannot educate our youngsters, what future does the country have?
I agree there are other types of poverty (which you mention), whereby people can be trapped indefintely.
