They make the decision to take a bit of short term pain / earn no money for 3 - 4 years with a view to maximising their earning potential in future.
If they don't think the benefit of maximising earning potential is worth the short term pain, they have the choice to head out to work instead.
That's completely different from suffering with mental health issues / acting as an unpaid carer for elderly relatives and other sorts of poverty where people have no choice in the matter.
