I remember when he went on stage at Hyde Park in 1992 waving the union flag around and was hounded by the NME for this apparently racist behaviour for some time afterwards. 2 years after that gig those same hacks were wanking themselves silly at Oasis and the like and flaunting the same flag with gay abandon. That was all cool though, yeah? Because they decided it was.
People will argue that context matters and they will be right - our national flag is not inherently racist. I'd love them tell me what was wrong with the context of Morrissey and the union flag at Hyde Park. After they've got that wrong they can have a listen to 'Your Arsenal' and get 'National Front Disco' wrong as well.
Still, he got flak from the MENSA candidates in our tabloid press for apparently glorifying the Moors Murderers on The Smiths' debut album (when, as any fule no, he was doing the opposite), so he was well used to it even back then.
