Did you think the UK would drop out the day after the referendum or something? There's a process. Article 50 was triggered; ergo the vote was acted upon and not ignored.
As for the mess we're in that's caused largely by the EU refusing point blank from the outset to discuss our trading relationship until after we'd left and paid the 'divorce bill'.
The EU knew full well the mess that would create and their decision was a cynical move designed to frustrate Brexit.
The EU has been negotiating with the UK for the past two + years. The mess is entirely of the UK's own making. The rest just sounds like conspiratorial hysteria. Or the Daily Express. Although I guess that's synonymous.
