I really empathise. I am very soft when it comes to all animals. I stop the car if I'm about to hit a bird. And I've been where you are right now. It's a very acute sadness.
We adopt older dogs (8 years and upwards). Often they come to us with pre-existing medical issues and we've lost lots of them over the years. It never gets better having to face up to those final moments.
What works for us, which I have to stress does not work for everyone, is to spend a few weeks/months mourning, then bring another dog into our home. We never forget our dogs (not least because our house is covered in pictures of them), but it does focus your mind on the next one
