Their defence had Oswell in their back pocket and their full backs stopped almost all potential crosses coming in to him.
I honestly think that if they were in the conference south they would walk it. As would we to be fair looking at it, but geographically thatís probably where they should be.
Defence and midfield wise we were very good today I thought - they were kept quiet for 88 minutes and we held a good shape in midfield for a change. Usually there is so much space in the middle when we arenít in possession that the opposition exploit but it wasnít there today. Even Harry Winter had a good game, plus Turnbull shielding the back 4 might be just what we have been missing. Warbourton was playing far too deep again though to be effective though.
People are moaning for managerial change but honestly what did Jim Gannon do wrong today? Being picky I could say not bringing Stephenson on maybe 15/20 minutes earlier, or keeping Adam Thomas on all game when the full back had the better of him for the full 90 minutes........ but is it Gannonís fault that 20 corners came to nothing? Is it Gannonís fault that no crosses beat the first man? Is it Gannonís fault that our best chance that fell to Oswell went straight to the keeper for such an easy save he didnít have to move?
Interesting to note that their goal came seconds after Oswell inexplicably slid in on their midfielder who already had Thomas on him - but he ended up sliding into Thomas leaving their player free to pick a cross into the box. If I was Gannon I would be absolutely incensed and rightly so.
I love him to bits Oswell - the best player we have had facing goal for years and years, but with his back to goal he offers just as much as I would if I was on the pitch and Iím sh*te. I really wonder if he has had his head turned at some point in January because itís like watching a different player since then.
I would say play off hopes are over for another season for sure. Plus even if we finished in them we have proved today that we arenít yet good enough to beat play off teams.
Disappointing and a kick in the teeth today watching that when we were really all over them all game but onwards and upwards - letís just plan for next season when thereís ideally no Salford and Harrogate and we can have a proper proper go with a full time hybrid set up and Jim Gannon at the helm - and crucially new owners that put all their effort into pushing the club forward and not just making a profit
