As for Stockport Metro - you was arguing about not having a major sporting institution or facility in the town. Stockport Metro and their success prove that wrong emphatically.
As for your list, that depends on how it is being measured, are we talking town - old scale or are we talking metropolitan borough?
In which case Wigan, Wirral, Dudley for just three are all bigger than Stockport, and Stockport itself is bigger than Newcastle.
The thing is, you believe the buildings to have no architectural value, I don't.
I believe buildings like Red Rock, the Grand Central Development, and the new Stockport Homes building are quite aesthetically pleasing. I don't view them as bland, drab, mundane, ugly or any of the other adjectives you use to describe them.
They are also the start of various developments in the town. The more developments like Red Rock, the office and hotel development around Grand Central bring people and money into the town, the greater the opportunity for big iconic buildings to be built.
You also fail to realise some of the reason Stockport doesn't have the facilities, buildings etc.. those other towns you mention do, is precisely because it is so close to Manchester, something that can't be changed. We have to be careful not to try and compete with Manchester.
I don't disagree with a lot of what you say, but I don't see the need to go putting the town down and denigrating what it does have and what it is doing.
