We applied about twelve months back to appear on a charity album which is released annually by an organisation called Specialized (a teen/young adults cancer charity).
They choose a main band, usually of the Ska/punk/mod tendency annually and invite other unsigned bands to submit a song. This year - The Jam.
The quirk - they choose the song for you to play. So ya can't just pick your fave and most popular/easy song (else they'd have a zillion recordings of Going Underground to wade through).
We already cover a couple of Jam tunes of course and had hoped we'd be asked to cover a song we already knew well...of course we got some curve ball song that no-one other than our lead singer, fully fledged Jam/Weller fetishist knew.
Thought - sod it. Booked a recording studio and had a punt at it.
We didn't think we had a chance of being accepted (far better bands than us out there and let's face it, we're not THE most technically minded band. The idea of moving from our four chord punky comfort zone was daunting to say the least. Our bass player even had to learn how to play a second string and I underwent, for only the second time in my life, the joy of playing to a click track which, ahem finds out your frailties and holes in your technique somewhat.
To our surprise (and in truth we were absolutely staggered) they liked us. Accepted our song. And the album has just been released. All the money from sales goes to charity.
Well...enough rambling. Here it is....Hope you enjoy it...and perhaps, if you like the Jam, you might consider buying the album.
Specialized - The Jam
