I used to go and watch England but yesterday I chose to listen to the Scotland game on the radio rather than watch us. Admittedly if the Lithuania game had mattered I'd have been watching, but I knew it would be a bore-fest that would add nothing to my Sunday. That's where we're at as far as I'm concerned. I want us to do well and I have to say that despite myself I'm glad we're there, mainly because not being there would be worse. I don't even demand we blob everyone 5-0 or whatever it is some seem to want/expect. But we just have so little about us that even in a game that didn't matter I knew we'd find a way to make it even more pointless than it already was.
Kane is clearly on fire at the minute and Rashford has something about him. However Dele Alli has the look of a man who flatters to deceive to me and I cannot find it in me to say anything good or bad about any of the rest of them, football-wise. They're just supremely beige.
Pick 23 Englishmen from the PL. Find one of them to act as the national scapegoat for when it goes wrong, despite the fact no-one with any sense thinks we'll trouble the latter stages anyway. Bring them home again. Navel gaze about how it all went wrong. Identify our football culture as being at fault. Implement no meaningful changes. Repeat ad nauseum.
