The lack of commercial stuff was a collective thing, voted for by their fans. That's why there's no sponsor on the shirts. Same thing. There may be in future if it's what they believe in, which does then give the likes of us the chance to call them sellouts.
But crucially, it's a democratic choice of their fans. They get to vote on things. The things that matter to fans. If only we'd had that at times in our recent past.
Likewise, the TV kick off thing. Their dislike for TV games was because they inconvenienced regular supporters. Moving a game from a Saturday afternoon to a Friday night in a town within Greater Manchester wasn't an inconvenience. For some, it was better. Even so, they voted on it and again, crucially it was their choice. I see absolutely no sellout there.
Like every fanbase, they're a broad church. The people I personally know are sound. Many of the others I've encountered have been the opposite.
They all watch Big United. The ones I know have even been to games, but only on freebies because rightly or wrongly, they opposed the Glazers (who everyone seems really keen on referring to as Glaziers) and refuse to put another penny in. History has perhaps shown they over-reacted? Who knows? That's for them to decide. I can't personally get arsed enough to have a strong opinion on it, them not being my football team.
I'm all for digging them out where it's valid. They have more than their fair share of absolute oddballs and weirdos and I believe their parasitic nature, leaching off Big United's identity is totally at odds with pretty much every football club in the land. Smaller clubs especially represent a sense of individuality and a long history fighting against the odds. FCUM have taken a sample of MUFC's DNA and doctored it to create their own little version. It's not what it's about, for me. It's a shortcut, a cheat. As much as they could be rightly proud of community work, charity stuff, and some fan initiatives, they're only able to do it because they've broken off a few crumbs of Big United and added some sugar. That's not how football works for me.
