Perhaps true, although it's a dangerous game to get into once you stop talking football and start talking politics.
However I was merely stealing a famous quote to wonder aloud (and perhaps rhetorically) what it is that drives some people to take that line.
In another context and to perhaps illustrate the point better, you may recall (as I think you were there) someone disagreed with a point made at a County forum and they prefaced their comments with 'My grandfather used to play for this club' as though it gave the opinion to follow any more weight. Bizarre and pointless.
