Can you hear that ticking sound? It sounds just like a clock; tick, tick, tick.
It's the clock that has counted out Blowfish's 15 minutes of fame.
It started when he took on the Hemi guys, to show them how smart he was and to make them look stupid and lazy. He was out to prove that even a Chevy guy could make a Hemi run.
It continued through his successes in Hemi Challenge races, all of which came because he worked thousands of hours and spent incredible amounts of Daddy's money to develop a combination that would rule a class that nobody had really cared about for years anyway.
It kept ticking while he ridiculed everyone around him, especially Bucky and the Barton guys, because he actually believed that the ridiculous money and time he was spending was something nobody else had ever thought of. After all, he was a pioneer, the new-wave Hemi guy.
It ticked away while he became more and more arrogant and self-absorbed, as his disciples believed that he was actually creating something completely new, not just finally working on a class that had gone unnoticed for years. He was their God and they worshipped him. Blowfish the Rockstar.
The ticking continued right through the comings and goings of numerous customers, each of whom came to realize that they could spend the money and have the same stuff as Blowfish, but they could never run as fast as he could, unless they were willing to sacrifice engines like he did and make Sportsman racing a fulltime job.
The ticking got louder when the Barton crew finally said enough is enough and went back to work, to prove to Blowfish and everyone else that they weren't lazy or stupid, just smart businesspeople. When the class was asleep, they didn't see the need to build $65,000 grenades that would only last 2 or 3 passes before they self-destructed. But when Blowfish the Rockstar came on the scene, they saw that they had to open up the toolbox and go back to the business they had started.
The good news is that the ticking ended this weekend. It didn't end with a bang, either. It ended with a whimper. The whimper of Blowfish whining that the rules aren't fair anymore and that the Barton cars only capable of beating him because they have an unfair weight advantage. Our hero, the New Kid in Town, has now used up his 15 minutes of fame and come full circle. The pursuer is now the pursued, and a lot of people are very happy.
