Will The Hitcher Be His Big One?
Some people in Hollywood are worried about Tom Howell. They worry about the way he is acting. And in a couple of instances the friends he hangs around with-friends who are a little older and a little wild.
"I really don't care what people think," he commented. "My friends are my business."
That certainly is true but friends can help us or hurt us.
Tom has done well as an actor-but he has yet to break out of teen-oriented films that others in Hollywood are doing. Some feel his best work to date was in his first film, The Outsiders. Grandview U.S.A wasn't a terrific film nor were Secret Admirer and Red Dawn. Tom's most recent film -The Hitcher- could be a very important one for him. It contains the kind of dramatic fireworks that could push him over the top as a really important young actor, not just another teen star.
Tom Howell has some heavy competition these days -from Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Judd Nelson and others. In five years, which one will be a major star and which will have fallen into obscurity? Let's hope Tom is one of the survivors!
