Hi Mike,
My last email was Dec 2007 and previous one Dec 2005.Well I found out about my Grandad 3rd Engineer on a ahip S.S.Sagamore out of Bostom Mass.USA.Torpedoed 3rd March 1917 by U-49.She sank in 30 minutes and 3 lifeboats were launched. They tried to stay together overnight. But a big storm came up and in the morning, there was only one life boat to be seen.Of the other two nothing was ever found. My G/D was one of the 17 survivors at this point. On the morning of 12 March 1917 a Blue Funnel ShipS.S.Deucalion Spotted the Life boat. They rescued the only 7 members left alive. One of whom was my G/D.They were landed at Capetown.S.A.and 5 had to have their feet amputated because of Gangrene and Frostbite. My Mum always indicated to me and we also had a big Newspaper cutting that he was feted in Capetown as a hero and he arrived home with his feet. But was in a lot of pain and they took a toe or piece of flesh off every so often.Till 1920 when they operated on him continually till 1922.By this time he had lost his legs up to his knees. He always had to use two sticks to walkwith his prothesises. In September 1917 the ship S.S.British Transport rammed the U-49 for me.Then sank it with gunfire.I am wondering if anyone would have any ideas where all these operations would take place.Or point me in a direction. The piece of paper from this web site gave me the one piece of info I could chase but they have no other
records.veterans.help@spva.gsi.gov.uk.I have one other request if anyone has or knows of a photo of the ship that rammed U-49.her name was S.S.British Transport Houlder Brothers.I would like to try and obtain a copy. You have a great site Mike and it gets better all the time.Once again I'm getting the Mersey Mist in my eyes again.Night Night and God Bless.Ken B
