In the 1950s we used to go to Mass at the old workhouse Chapel up at the top of Mount Pleasant where it curved towards Brownlow Hill. It was where the Christ the King Cathedral steps are today. It was a dismal one-storey buliding, lightblue-washed plaster walls and wooden pews with a central division down the middle of the pews (at waist-height).
The floor was bare planks. It was called a 'chapel-of-ease' for those who could not get to St Philip Neri's or St Peter's in bad weather. The grounds were wasteland and tumble-down buildings.
