Further to my previous response, Hale Cliff was an area of Oglet, near the river Mersey. Shipbreaking took place at Hale Cliff Wharf, where there was previously a salt works. There used to be a quarry at Hale Cliff, which may be how it got its name. Perhaps your relative worked there.
