Originally known as Mersey Island, it was an artificial island between Georges Dock and Canning Dock on 3 sides and the Mersey to its West side. It lost its water on the North and East sides with the conversion of Georges Dock into the building site for the 3 graces, The Royal Liver buildings was actually built directly on the in-filled Georges Dock. It actually gets its name from John Mann, an oil-stone dealer who lived and worked in the vicinity and died there in 1784.
