Whoever reads this that is interested in my problem, I just recently bought a 2 year old mare. Being stupid and not asking the question of whether or not she was handled and people friendly, I found out the hard way the reason why she was so cheap, and NOT because they had to get rid of some horses due to a cut down. My farrier said to me that she believes my mare was, when weaned, body clipped and then thrown out to pasture, basically to live life as a brood mare, so she's never been handled and socialized to the familiar things all my other horses are familiar with. She shies away from me if I get to close and spooks if I lift my foot into the air behind me to get the dust outta my shoe, and even when I'm slowly combing my fingers through her mane, if she ever lets me get that close. It's almost like she sees me as this person that's gonna kill her or something...it's really THAT BAD, considering she'll tremble and flinch when she's really THAT afraid. I'm afraid to even give her vaccinations and stuff because she bolts, even when tied to the fence and if something is poking her that she's not used to, I don't know how they ever gave her shots in the past, unless they drugged her or something. My farrier literally had to tie her up when clipping her hooves and even said to me that she believes the owners had done the same method that she was doing with her because she worked so well as if she'd had it done before. The only place on her that can even remotely be touched without too much of a reaction is her face, and my farrier said that the reason for that could be as simple as they probably pet her on the face everytime she came in for feeding, and that's it. I really want to keep her, but I don't have the time to train and work with her myself, and because I'm no professional, all my attempts so far I feel as though I've taken steps backwards and made her even more afraid of me, which is not at all what I was aiming for. PLEASE!!!!! If ANYONE can help, or if anyone knows of SOMEONE ELSE that can help me, I would love it. I need someone that can either take her to their place and work with her one on one until she is the sweet horse I thought I was buying her for, or come over to my place and work with her there. I can't transport since I don't have the means, I just REALLY need the help. I'm desperate for her to be people trained or I will be forced to sell her because I do not want my future foals from her, taking after her bad, skiddish, people afraid habits...that's if I can even catch her to breed her. I literally have to corner her and walk as slowly as I can towards her...and she even had a hard time wanting to eat from my hand. I am willing to pay a decent amount, whatever is reasonable because she is a very nice mare and I feel that I got her for a good deal...but that I just wasn't told the TRUE reason for why she was selling so low...PLEASE!!!! PLEASE!!!! PLEASE!!!! If you can help, please email me at Reneeprice55@hotmail.com I am located in San Antonio, TX.
