I too use the higher resolution because of my 22" CRT monitor. I am using Links 2001 at 1280 x 1024 x 32 3D graphics and I can say that if I go to a higher resolution like 1600 x 1200, I wouldn't be able to see the ball. Whenever you set the resolution at a ligher level, everything, including the swing meter is a little bit smaller.
Just make sure that you update the most modern updates and patches for your version.
