playing links 99 with IP connection

Question: Having trouble playing links 99 on windows 98 conecting with a friend. We connect with IP address and all is good and when we continue loading the game with myself hosting or visa versa the game shows choosing course etc. but craps out and we cannot play?
Any ideas
