I had this same problem with my Nvidia 32 MB card as well. I phoned microsoft and they told me to download the older driver 30.82 and i have had ZERO problems since then. I even run at all the highest graphic settings. I have only directx 8.1 so it must be the drivers not the directx
: Originally I installed the latest 40 driver and
: already had directx 8.1 and got the
: problem. Last night I got directx 9 AND
: went back to the 30.82 win2k/xp GeForce2
: driver and everything works ok now on all
: the highest graphic detail settings even.
: So I'm not sure either if it was directx 9
: that fixed it (I doubt it) or the old
: driver. I think tonight I'll try going
: back to the new driver with directx 9.
: Either way, thanks Microsoft for telling
: us to get the "latest drivers"
: when that makes things worse!

: Absolutely Micah.
: When I installed the newest 40 series driver,
: I had rendering problems in both 2K1 and
: 2K3. I still don't know whether this
: problem has anything to do with DirectX 9
: or not since I installed them both at the
: same time, but once I went back to the
: earlier driver the problem disappeared.

: I'm having a similar problem when trying to
: load courses in Links 2001. Have you ever
: seen a problem like this with that version
: perhaps? I'll try the 30.82 driver since
: I have the exact same vid card as you.

: I went back to 30.82 which was released in
: August 2002. This was the one that
: Microsoft support recommended. The one
: you are using must be a bit newer so that
: is good. As I mentioned in my other post,
: Nvidia has claimed that the problem will
: be fixed in the next driver release, so I
: will probably just wait for that.
: Everything seems to be working normally
: for now.

: Hi again Jeff, thanks for the update.
: Curious, when you reverted back to an earlier
: driver, which one did you revert to?
: Reason I ask is because I uninstalled the new
: driver and downloaded 32.2 (not the one I
: had been using previously, I had been
: using one of the 28 series).
: Since I"ve installed 32.2 my problems
: have disappeared. Might be worth a try if
: you haven't tried that version.

: Just as an update, I have spoken to Nvidia
: and
: they claim that the issue will be resolved
: with the next web release.

: Wow Jeff! Great job of troubleshooting!
: My next step was going to be going back to an
: earlier version of video drivers, but
: since it didn't work for you I'm guessing
: I won't have much luck either. But I'm
: anxious to see if the lower resolution
: settings helps me also. I'll try it out
: and report back to you.

: I just played Cambrian Ridge up to the 8th
: hole
: (par 5)on the lowest detail setting. I
: then saved the game and increased the
: detail setting one notch. When I went
: back to the game I was able to tee off and
: hit a second shot but when it tryed to
: render the third shot it hung up. Again
: the third shot would have been one where
: water in front of the green would have
: been visible. I set the detail setting
: back to lowest and restarted and was able
: to play on.
: --Previous Message--
: I just realized that what probably made this
: work was that I also decreased the detail
: level in the graphics options screens to
: the lowest level (fastest redraws).
: I also noticed that on holes with water,
: there is none, there is just a big black
: hole. I think this may be part of the
: problem, on higher detail levels the
: computer is trying to draw the water and
: that may be where it crashes. This would
: explain being able to play some holes
: (i.e. ones without water hazards) while on
: the higer detail level.
: Still thinking......

: I installed the game and updated to DirectX
: 9.0
: at around the same time so I am not sure
: if it worked on DirectX 8.1. Good point
: though, I would expect an updated Nvidia
: driver to go along with DirectX 9.0 in the
: very near future. I did try going back to
: an older video driver because that has
: worked for me (with my sound card) on
: other games, but it didn't change
: anything. I'm pretty sure that I read
: somewhere that there is no way to
: uninstall DirectX, so we are stuck with
: DX9 if that is the problem.
: I'm not sure if this is anything, but today I
: made sure to set my desktop settings to
: exactly the same as the game resolution
: settings, and I was actually able to play
: Cambrian Ridge. It ended up freezing
: during a putting stroke on the 7th hole,
: not at "rendering" as before. I
: was also able to resume this game later
: which I hadn't been able to do in the past
: and played to the 14th hole where I had to
: save. Curious??
: Thanks for the input, I'll keep thinking.....

: Jeff,
: I don't have a solution for you, but I'm
: having the identical problem, with exactly
: the same courses. We both have the same
: video card (actually mine is 32 meg)and I
: also have the most recent drivers
: installed. I really think this is a
: compatibility prob with this card. curious
: though, do you have Direct X9 installed?
: I've been trying to determine whether
: these problems occurred before or after I
: installed DX9. I hear MS will be coming
: out with a patch in the near future. will
: be interesting to see if it helps or not.
: --Previous Message--
: I just got Links 2003 and I am having a
: problem
: where the game locks up while 'rendering'.
: It seems to be dependent on which course,
: I can't even start Cambrian Ridge or
: GlenEagles, and Tribute and Skeleton Coast
: froze up after playing a few holes. I was
: able to play 18 holes at Cabo del Sol and
: Kauri Cliffs. The game plays great when it
: works, very smooth. I have tried a few
: different setups (resolutions, detail
: levels, etc..)but nothing helped.
: pentium 566
: 320MB Ram
: 64MB Nvidia Geforce 2 (with Dec. 3, 2002
: drivers)
: ~ 9G free on hard drive
: Any ideas???
