Wow Jeff! Great job of troubleshooting!
My next step was going to be going back to an earlier version of video drivers, but since it didn't work for you I'm guessing I won't have much luck either. But I'm anxious to see if the lower resolution settings helps me also. I'll try it out and report back to you.
: I just played Cambrian Ridge up to the 8th hole
: (par 5)on the lowest detail setting. I
: then saved the game and increased the
: detail setting one notch. When I went
: back to the game I was able to tee off and
: hit a second shot but when it tryed to
: render the third shot it hung up. Again
: the third shot would have been one where
: water in front of the green would have
: been visible. I set the detail setting
: back to lowest and restarted and was able
: to play on.

: I just realized that what probably made this
: work was that I also decreased the detail
: level in the graphics options screens to
: the lowest level (fastest redraws).
: I also noticed that on holes with water,
: there is none, there is just a big black
: hole. I think this may be part of the
: problem, on higher detail levels the
: computer is trying to draw the water and
: that may be where it crashes. This would
: explain being able to play some holes
: (i.e. ones without water hazards) while on
: the higer detail level.
: Still thinking......

: I installed the game and updated to DirectX
: 9.0
: at around the same time so I am not sure
: if it worked on DirectX 8.1. Good point
: though, I would expect an updated Nvidia
: driver to go along with DirectX 9.0 in the
: very near future. I did try going back to
: an older video driver because that has
: worked for me (with my sound card) on
: other games, but it didn't change
: anything. I'm pretty sure that I read
: somewhere that there is no way to
: uninstall DirectX, so we are stuck with
: DX9 if that is the problem.
: I'm not sure if this is anything, but today I
: made sure to set my desktop settings to
: exactly the same as the game resolution
: settings, and I was actually able to play
: Cambrian Ridge. It ended up freezing
: during a putting stroke on the 7th hole,
: not at "rendering" as before. I
: was also able to resume this game later
: which I hadn't been able to do in the past
: and played to the 14th hole where I had to
: save. Curious??
: Thanks for the input, I'll keep thinking.....

: Jeff,
: I don't have a solution for you, but I'm
: having the identical problem, with exactly
: the same courses. We both have the same
: video card (actually mine is 32 meg)and I
: also have the most recent drivers
: installed. I really think this is a
: compatibility prob with this card. curious
: though, do you have Direct X9 installed?
: I've been trying to determine whether
: these problems occurred before or after I
: installed DX9. I hear MS will be coming
: out with a patch in the near future. will
: be interesting to see if it helps or not.

: I just got Links 2003 and I am having a
: problem
: where the game locks up while 'rendering'.
: It seems to be dependent on which course,
: I can't even start Cambrian Ridge or
: GlenEagles, and Tribute and Skeleton Coast
: froze up after playing a few holes. I was
: able to play 18 holes at Cabo del Sol and
: Kauri Cliffs. The game plays great when it
: works, very smooth. I have tried a few
: different setups (resolutions, detail
: levels, etc..)but nothing helped.
: pentium 566
: 320MB Ram
: 64MB Nvidia Geforce 2 (with Dec. 3, 2002
: drivers)
: ~ 9G free on hard drive
: Any ideas???
