Hi,
I have been nagged about this for almost 12 years, and realize I am not doing my daughter nor the world any favors by not going forward with it.
My daughter is 11(12 in March) and she has Trisomy 21, or Down Syndrome. I was 22 when I became pregnant and was on Ortho Novum 777. The contradictions in the PDR at that time indicated that Triploidy(the tripling of chromosomes) was discovered in miscarried babies during research. There were many times during my pregnancy that my body tried to miscarry, but my baby girl was determined to make it into this world.
Down Syndrome is caused by the ovum/egg not maturing, but still being fertile. The immature egg meets with the sperm and forms the baby, but it has disordered genetic information. This is why it is believed that women over 35 are more prone to having DS children- their eggs do not develop fully due to the changing hormones.
The way that this happens is that birth control pills prevent the woman's eggs from maturing and releasing. In my case I was given an antibiotic during surgery, but was not told about it, and my pills became inactive. My eggs were not developed, since I was on the pill for 6 years prior to this happening, and my daughter has DS.
I was told the information about the pill causing Down Syndrome by a Ortho Novum Drug Rep, while I was working a neurology clinic. He asked about my baby, and said,"Wow you're awfully young for a Down Syndrome Baby. Were you on any form of birth control when you got pregnant?" I told him the details, and he told me to get out my PDR. I did- and there it was in black and white. Since then I have looked, and the information is not a specific, but if others will let me know if they have similar stories, we can start a class action, and if nothing else make the companies put warnings about the types of "abnormalities", not just that "Fetal Abnormalities may occur if becoming pregnant during therapy"!
