Sonnets From A Green And Growing Place
Where bush and bough 'neath snow and ice were laid.
Lamenting long, my soul would sing and sigh
For crimson-golden green of Autumn made.
For in that time of summer's twilight fall,
When leaf on leaf fell blazing to the earth,
I had a love who was my all in all,
And in the autumn groves we sang in mirth.
But now, amid the frozen, snow-clad trees
A solitary bird begins to sing,
And in his song the promise of release
From longing makes my wearied soul take wing!
As winter unto spring's new green gives place,
My soul flies high to join this bird of grace!
