Birthday boys should think about jelly and ice cream, not bread and dripping. We substituted dripping with lard on toast and a bit of salt on it as we couldn't afford expensive food like dripping. I did like the jelly that settled on the bottom of the dripping though, as I remember it was very tasty and a thorough treat. BBC English was quite different from the spoken language and BBC English was taught at schools, no wonder I struggled with it. We all spoke in dialects, even difficult to define what was being said in the next town, and remember my first days in the army was spent trying to understand what was being said in the different dialects. I can remember fish and chips being cooked in dripping or lard and it was used to fry bacon with, very tasty.
