T'is good to see that the years have not impacted your acerbic humour. It is good to hear from you.
I need to clear up a couple of things that you brought up.
(a) I am not a Democrat, neither am I a Republican. I hold my British citizenship, consequently ineligible to vote in the USA.
(b) Labourite? A resounding yes, but in the sense of the old Hugh Gaitskill/ Harold Wilson style. Throw in Harold's pipe and mackintosh and there you have me.
Why? : Because my dad worked down pit (Old Roundwood in Wakefield) and I've seen what the blue blooded, toffee-nosed Conservatives did to the working folk. Remember Thatcher?
Still, all that being cleared up, you think that a foreign country's election will not affect you Geordie?
Take a walk around, count the number of MacDonald's hamburger joints, or Kentucky fried chickens you have in your town. They, like it or not affect your children's and grandchildren's diets for the worse. They are not a Brit home-grown enterprise.
The economy? Visit British Leyland, Rolls-Royce or the Sheffield steel-mills. Where are they? Tour the empty factories in Birmingham or Coventry if you dare, and you will see how foreign elections impact you and your family directly.
Visit the grave of a squaddie from the Royal Green Jackets and ask his parents why he was killed in some god-forsaken hell hole called Iraq or Afghanistan or any other "Stan".
His parents will tell you it was at the behest of some President that went on an ego trip. The British Prime Minister thought it was a great idea, so off goes little Tommy Atkins for Queen, Country and Foreign oil.
Can we all say "Dulce et decorum est pro Patria Mori"? A moment of silence here?
I wrote that " Letter from America" because on my last visit to England I talked to many people in pubs, the streets, I spoke to my sister, I spoke to the homeless sleeping on the streets of Oxford, and most of them did want to understand what the hell is happening in the USA.
I was trying to raise a warning flag that the two candidates, the two clowns ( I have nothing but scorn for them) will be influencing the course of the western world for the next four years, and Britexit notwithstanding, will have a profound impact on the political and economic course of Britain whether one likes it or not.
As I said Vladimir Putin is slavering .
I am curious about your comment about an American President ( I take it to be Obama)trying to influence your recent referendum. Can you clarify?
So Geordie, I'll put this one to bed, enjoy the circus antics of the American political arena, but do not fool yourself that you will not be affected by what is happening over here.
Thank you for your time and patience.
Be well
