Well you would expect me to have a view on the current price of milk now wouldn’t you? With the recent revelations of someone on TV supposedly genuinely not knowing that chickens came from eggs (shock horror), it may seem just as shocking to note just how many people know nothing about where their milk comes from.
In order for a dairy cow to produce milk it must first give birth to a calf. Female calves are raised to continue the process of milking whilst male calves, which some maintain do not make as good steak meat (as non dairy breeds they do not make particularly good eating) face ‘the chop’ so to speak.
The price of a pint of milk in some cases is cheaper than bottled water, in my view too cheap considering the amount of work involved in producing it
Let me tell you for nothing that cows belong on grass (check if you agree via www.happycows.eu) not in a hotel and I don’t care what its room service is like nor how many ruddy stars it has. It’s the reason that cows have so many stomachs - they can turn grass into protein whilst you and I cannot. I understand that it’s difficult to maintain grass feeding system in some places in the world when one minute its plus 50C and the next moment it’s minus 50 and it’s impossible to grow any grass at all. That’s why cattle used to be moved. Some of you may remember old TV programs such as ‘Rawhide’ and the problematic cattle drives including dealing with rustling to find new pasture. Ah those where the days ! Once the railroads were introduced it was decided that to be more efficient with fewer problems we should send the cows by train to pastures new as well as to the market. Can you imagine the chaos that would cause in the already crowded and chaotic as well as complicated and expensive train system in the UK? But don’t worry there is no real need is there? We still have plenty of grass thankfully what with all the recent rain and besides which I have seen the future, and believe me it’s not all that rosy.
So chaps have a nice weekend as I tour in Lulu III enjoying the English country side and till next time …..
