PERHAPS IT’S just me but I’m beginning to think that more and more people are passing the buck instead of being able to deal with the problems themselves. I find myself replying to just about any “Can I help you?” with a “Probably not” before finding myself asking immediately for a supervisor as my preferred first option.
Now I have only been back in the UK after a short visit overseas but already I’m turning into a Victor Meldrew character. It all started on the ferry back when I bought a men’s grooming product which despite a false top and bottom as well as padded sides, rattled about like a marble in an empty dustbin and when unpacked was about a third of the size of the box. Then once home I bought some takeaway sushi, of which one third of the packet, conveniently covered with a label, contained only fresh air or, in fact, as they call it modified air.
And what about a Supermarket Indian takeaway combo I was tempted to try, where the only really memorable thing about it was the massive pile of rubbish I was left with! At a time where money is tight and excess rubbish is becoming an issue a clearer distinction must be made between packaging for protection and excess packaging created by marketing companies solely for promotion.
In the UK I have never seen so much rubbish no wonder its beginning to accumulate by the roadside.Perhaps it's the extra cost of the skips now as the price went up at the end of May another Tory stealth tax ? So with all the focus on ‘if’ and ‘when’ what bins should be put outside by the roadside to be emptied by whom and how often there seems to be an obvious solution. Stop creating it!
The massive rise in excess packaging, whether moving toward recyclable or not, are NOT for your convenience at all, it’s misleading at best and a deliberate con at worst.
Some companies especially white goods such as fridges and TV’s will collect your defunct ones when delivering new, perhaps they have come across security at the local tip which now put even airport security to shame. So, again I have an idea.
Although modified air packaged goods will keep in your fridge for longer it also keeps in the Supermarket longer.
Apparently it’s due to ‘customer demand’. Okay so lets try an experiment just like I did a while ago, go to the customer service desk and say: “For your records, I do not want any goods out of season and prefer the local produce and minimally packaged, if not I will return the empty packets to you to deal with.” Just imagine the local supermarket free delivery service having to pick up your rubbish (which they created for your convenience) every time they delivered. Instead of funding a local bypass supermarkets would have to fund new incinerators or landfill sites instead. So are Easter Eggs packaged for their protection or their promotion? They are on sale now at a fraction of the cost they were at Easter so go out there and grab a bargine
