This all came about from the last few meets which made me ponder over . We have all done it in the past filled up with avgas those were the days after work , opened the hanger doors rolled in and then got the wanky wanky pump going. I suppose it was in lieu of cash as we did not get much then and in Honkers old tom’s and mine where gas guzzlers. Still now if you have a diesel avtur does the job and on a RAF base that’s no problem. So back to the witter .
Should you take the little sugars or goodies home?
Will someone please explain to me why we have such a problem taking stuff home? If we go out shopping, make our selection from what’s available then pay for them and then leave them on the counter and walk out of the shop we are described as being forgetful at best or stupid at worst. But leave a perfectly decent meal which you have paid for in a restaurant and for some reason not been able to finish and that seems to be the proper thing to do.
It must be something to do with sitting down that makes us all compliant, we seem to be able to walk out of a takeaway without much problem even pizzas, burgers, fish & chips and donner kebabs pose no threat in fact the sooner we can extricate ourselves from within the better. But put a knife and fork and some proper china in front of us on a table with a cloth on it and a proper posh seat and we totally lose control.
As a dedicated restaurant , hotel and people-watcher I am constantly amazed by the subversive tactics used to remove food in restaurants from one plate to another. Anyone who has a mother will have been subjected to the “Go on you can eat it” which includes yours, hers as well as your brothers or sisters and even your Father’s if he’s not paying attention, with the excuse “Well, he’s a growing lad.”
How about the secret napkin trick where a paper napkin or tissue is carefully removed from a handbag and then whilst everyone’s back is turned, leftovers are wrapped and bagged in seconds without anyone noticing…except me! You have paid for it, it already belongs to you, we don’t mind if you want to take it home for the dog or the cat or even a salad or sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch! If you want to eat your leftovers at home later instead of throwing it away it’s actually quite a compliment and saves you money for the next meet.
If you want to practice people-watching you can do no better than to watch the ‘coffee people’at Star bucks (expensive coffee except when they gave it free not long back) that regularly help themselves to the little packets of sugar which automatically come with your coffee. Whether they take sugar in their coffee or not they usually take at least one from their own cup, and yours, and their guests and if there’s a bowl on the table, away go the sugars and the sweeteners too. But who do they really belong too?
Whilst I ponder this question you must excuse the pause as I was staying in a hotel a while back ,the moment – ‘breakfast included’ - and I am trying to eat as much as possible to last me the day whilst also trying to secrete a couple of rolls and butter and a bit of cheese along with one of those cute little jars of marmalade and a bit of fruit or maybe two whilst the waiter is topping up the display …..!
So till next time folks take care live each day as it’s the last .
