On this day 44 years ago, a pale skinned REME lad reported for duty to the Orderly Room in Kluang. This was to be the start of a most enjoyable 2 1/2 year posting. A month in The wksps to get a sun tan and then off to the Borneo Ulu. Kuching, Singapore saw me there for short term visits, then back to the wksps to see out the remainder of time in the Far East. I look upon this posting as the best and most memorable of all my years of service. Was it the Tiger or the great group of men that brings so many fond memories flooding back? Memories like the day we named the NAAFI " The Blades". All personnel up to their elblows in various paints redecotating the place. Not forgetting the portrait artist who filled three wall panels with his view of three local personalities. The hours I spent securing two tail rotor blades, one above each door and the visit of our friends the 'Ausies' who removed one for their trophy cabinet. (These Sioux T/R blades were subject to 1033 action and were held in the store but our goalkeeping cpl storeman Fred Clifton turned a blind eye.) Many more memories tend to make these 44 years compress into what seems like only weeks ago. Who remembers Magic Martin carrying the little bottle of K9P from the control tower back to the hangar with it held at arms length because of the dangers involved? Were there any better postings for us?
