Posted by Alan on 5/16/2005, 11:09 am, in reply to "Re: How many shows should a band play?" This is a sticky one, but fairly easy to explain. This is where I revert back to the idea that it all goes back to how it is excepted by the obverver/listener. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder if you will. Not to get into art snobery or anything, but I may not see some things as art, yet you may. Somethings I consider art, could be nothing of the sort to someone else. So the next question would be; who decides that, or how is it decided? There are many things in society, or different societies, that is considered art, yet I/you may not agree with that. Such as, the whole debate between the state/feds over adult art or nudes, what some see as XXX/vulgar, others see as art. I don't think there can be a blanket description, if a particular listener/observer believes that is art, then it art to them, if not, then it is not, to that person. Just because it is created does not qualify it as art, its in the obsevation that this can be assigned, not the creation. Once again, even if it is something that the observer/listener has created, it may qualify, and it may not. Even at that moment it is being created, you hear it at that moment as well. So I guess in short, that decision is subjective to each person.
This will be a response to a voice mail that Aaron left me on Sat...
In a nutsack, or nutshell which ever you prefer, he made the point that if Pops (or anyone) does not regard his hobbies as art can it still be considered art, and if a particular person does not consider something he/she has heard/seen as art is it still art?
I could list the things, works, songs I consider art, and list the things I do not consider art.....
But for the sake of not starting a whole new debate, or pissing someone off I don't think that would be wise. I would not want to be labelled as an art snob or something like that by all the rap fans out there or anything....weeee!
(ie- for music to be considered music, which is an art form, it must have two essential components, 1-rhythm 2-melody, if you just have one, its a musical technique, not music/art)
Drum solo, not art, musical technique. 2 note song, with bass, drums, vocal line...poopoopoopoo, 2 notes, art. (well maybe not, but I was just breaking it down.)
Being able to fart the star spangled banner? Now thats art!
