Okay, I want to play devil's advocate here.
Why play at all live? If music is from the heart and soul and all that, why leave your bedroom, garage or house to play for others. I know some might say it's fun. From my own experience, it is not fun playing in front of 2 or 3 paying customers, not getting paid, dealing with jerky club owners, etc. Some of the bigger shows I've played are certainly more fun, but I think ego building may have something to do with that.
