Could be any one of a number of problems but would suggest that the charger could be faulty or the led light, make sure the polarity is correct and that the battery is not some old one that has connected or corroded cells,or low electrolyte when connected up check you dont have an earth drain easiest way is to use a simple light bulb checker and see if the brightness dimms quickly.
