The 1st go-kart I drove after a 20 year hiatus from karting was a Honda 125cc Birel shifter kart.
This was also my 1st experience with a go-kart with a gear shift in my life.
I can't believe a total stranger let me drive it! I'm very sure I over revved it! Sorry buddy!
I think he was trying to recruit me into their shifter class. (OSKA)
They had there own set of karting rules outside of cik/asn, but where still able to run races on the same day as the go-karts running asn/cik rules.
I never understood how this could be done with approval from the go-karting safety counsel at that time.
anyways,
I had 4 stroke Honda experience from my childhood and wanted to buy a shifter on my return.
These big dreams were ignited because on display at Family KlarkWay (fkl) was a shifter that had a sign on it saying WIN ME!
But, at that time (1996) my family had sold the track 10 years prior, I was out of the loop and there was also a licensing program with moving up to faster go-karts here in Ontario, so slower 4 stroke seat/race time was required when running under cik/asn rules.... Not like now.
I also convinced myself the initial cost, maintenance cost, tire cost, complexity and the actual weight of the shifter kart would be too much for me ( a beginner again) and my OL to handle, so I purchased a really sweet Ferrari red
Birel AR -1 with a color matching Honda 4 stroke engine with a Noram drum clutch.
This was a beautifully constructed go-kart made in Italy.
The frame design of the AR-1 was very simple with NO torsion bars.
The seat struts on both the left and right sides were not welded which allowed for better seat adjustment for Honda OHV 4 stroke engine set-ups.
The steering column was also adjustable up and down.
I could raise and lower the front spindles and the back 40 mill axle.
My AR-1 had the really nice gold anodized brake set up also.
The simplicity of this design made it easier for me to learn the basic adjustments of the newer styled kart frames.
This style go-kart was much different then the go-karts I drove when I was younger.
There was also a Birel AR-4 model that was just like the AR-1 but it was for heavier drivers.
I also put full frontal G-Man protection and bread box style side pods on my Birel AR-1 which allowed for better resale and a happy buyer due to less frame exposure and damage during my use.
Depending on how you trimmed the G-Man nose cone, it could act like a front skid plate if trimmed correctly!
I always felt those two simply styled kart frames with full front protection with hockey puck tires was a great invention in our modern day 4 stroke go-karting world.
The only additional style kart that was needed at that time was a 4 stroke cadet size go-kart for smaller kids and a 4 stroke dually package for much bigger Adult Kids to complete the whole 4 stroke league.
I really hope someone with the right stuff will take the ball and run with this vision of a whole 4 stroke go-karting league with a unique set of rules from using our experiences from the past.
Is this not allowed in modern day insurance or something? and is that the reason this is not done today?
Other then arrive and drive!
