Posted by kartguy on 6/12/2007, 6:18 pm When I returned to karting in 1997 the Canadian karting manufacturing industry was no more.
When I left karting in 1977 I was a factory driver for FKL (Family Kartway Limited of Whitby, Ontario) and the Ontario Honda 4 cycle karting industry was booming in 1977 with Canadian made FKL karts.
The Formula K Kart Club had three Honda 4 stroke classes in '77; Junior, senior and senior dual engine.
There were no 2 stroke classes in the Formula K kart club only 4 stroke Honda.
(I will take a picture of my old club t- shirt and post it here soon)
There were only Canadian and American made chassis in our 4 cycle only club in 1977.
No European karts were yet to be imported to Canada.
It also seemed Ontario Karting offered hardly any employment.
The karts and parts that were available in 1997 were from Italy, France and very little USA.
And there were so many different choices of unreliable 2 stroke engines (no liquid cooling at that time) and classes to choose from at all tracks.
Karting seemed very scattered and fragmented in 1997 as it still seems today.
