Incoming freshmen who carry a full 15-hour credit load, declare a major by their sophomore year, and maintain a 3.0 GPA will receive a $500 tuition refund and frozen room and board rates for the following four years. The board will meet again next Tuesday, July 31 to approve this year's budget, which is expected to be reduced by $10.8 million.

Western Michigan University's Board of Trustees met in a special public session Tuesday morning to approve a 6.4% increase in resident tuition, the lowest increase among Michigan's 13 public universities announced so far. They voted to freeze non-resident tuition, enrollment fees, and room and board rates. The increase is effective this fall semester. Full-time resident underclassmen will now pay about $7,260 a year in tuition and fees, $394 more than last year. Full-time non-resident underclassmen will continue to pay about $16,401. 32
