Posted by Forrest At any rate, I managed to cut off the old valve body without damaging the threads, but now I don't know how to install the new valve in the system. I have a slip-to-threaded male nipple on one side, and what appears to be a male-to-female union on the other side that is glued in place. Do I have to dig up the PVC pipe on the downstream side exiting the box and put in a new union, or am I missing something obvious?

I had an automatic in-line valve that cracked on the input-side stem. I don't know why the valve body itself cracked - I fully purge the system with compressed air every fall before freezing starts. The valve had been in place for 8 years, and then I just noticed one day (two days ago) that water was gushing out of the valve box. Since the valve cracked on the supply side, I had to turn off the water to prevent wasting any more water.
