This is the story I've heard, and it's from several sources, including the "Jim Reeves Story" three-volume audiotape put out by the museum back in the 1980's. Marty says on the tape he was outside washing his hair in the rain, and he heard a plane go over and could tell it was flying very low. He knew the plane was in trouble because someone wouldn't normally be flying that low in such a heavy storm. A few seconds later he heard it crash. If he said anything in the interview about calling anyone, it was not included on the tape. He had no idea who the person was in the plane. One story I read said he left his house shortly afterward to attend a sporting event, and when he returned later that night he saw helicopters and police vehicles engaged in a search. I do not know at what point he became aware that Jim was the object of the search, and was undoubtedly the person flying the plane he had heard crash, but one story I read said that Marty did not take part in the search because "I didn't want to find him". Marty must have known that whoever was in that plane could not have survived, and I suppose it's understandable he didn't want to find Jim, figuring his condition would be something he didn't want to see. This is what I've been able to find out as best I can- perhaps there are others who have heard different accounts.

Great country music is a Reeves family tradition.
