There's the view held by many that the state is there as a crutch to lean on and to maximise any personal gain in any way they can. This is the view that has socialism written all over it and one that I do not support.
Then there is the viewpoint that the we go to work, we earn our keep, provide for our families and pay our taxes. Along our path through life, there will be bad times as well as good. The state is not a crutch though, it provides a safety net. When it's people trip or fall, the state will step in and support them, help them back on their feet as quickly as possible. This is one of the benefits that we do for one another by being good citizens and paying our taxes, a type of insurance policy if you like. In the UK, we have a tax set up for specifically this purpose. It's called National Insurance.
