In a previous life, in a previous occupation I had a carpet claim. I learned from the insurance company that they only reimburse for the value of the carpet as it lies on the floor. Lucky for me, they had just laid the carpet and was brand new, so they got full value. It seems (at least my insurance company) prorates the value. So if you have a 12 year old carpet, they are not going to reimburse you with the monetary value of brand new.
