To Glide or not to Glide

Is an "Glide " worth the investment? Does it really improve Drying times and do a good job on all carpeting.This "Glide" is really pushed on TMF.
My "Teacher" did not endorse the use of one because you can't "scrub" or agitate with it like you can with an metal edge.
