You didn't hurt your heater, it just flowed the opposite way. Your heater should maintain 2-3 gal of water in it at all times unless you run the pump dry, so lighting it isn't a problem. It is good practice to only turn "ON" the heater when the pump is operating, lighting it & leaving it on "pilot" until you are ready to start everything isn't a problem.
