I hear what you're saying gman about fringes tangling and being sucked up the tool's vac slot, and when I'm training or mentoring I've seen the students create the problem, but to be honest, it's a problem I don't encounter myself.
My preferred hand tool is a CFR, but I've also used GlideMaster and "pissing in the wind" tools, and I find that with the correct technique you don't have a problem. By placing the tool on the kilim or even the end of the rug itself, and drawing towards the tips of the fringes and beyond, I never encounter tangles etc.
As for the screen, I've obviously never needed to use it on carpet fringes. But I do something similar on damaged upholstery. I use a polyester net curtain and rinse/extract through that. I often like to get the customer involved in this by explaining the damage and cleaning problem and ask them to supply another pair of hands to hold the netting in place.Naturally I supply them with a pair of disposable gloves.
Safe and tangle free happy cleaning
The Ken
