For on-site work, I use a waterproof tarpaulin with a heavy duty cotton drop sheet on top. I'll do this whetehr working on top of carpet or hard floor.
Vac the reverse, vac the pile. Repeat as required.
Test as required. Be satisfied that a woven or hand knotted rug will not shrink or ruck.
Use appropriate chemicals as you would for fitted carpets. Don't agitate with a rotary unless you are confident about avoiding pile distortion. Use either a CRB machine with soft brushes or agitate by hand.
Don't rinse with a wand, always use a hand tool. Clean fringes both sides. I prefer not to bleach, but will treat cotton fringes with acetic acid or distilled vinegar then vac/extract without rinsing.
Towel dry the rug, groom the pile and turbo dry.
Safe and happy cleaning
The Ken
